The Review

Have you ever joined a Book Club where everyone has a pretty significant difference of tastes in genres? For instance, one person might be an avid romance reader, and yet another gravitates toward classic mystery novels. I am now the host of my work facility’s book club; but tackling which novel would be our first pick proved to be a challenge. Thankfully, The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year by Ally Carter matched almost all of these categories, skillfully intertwining a festive holiday setting, a budding romance, and a cleverly crafted mystery. This unique blend ensures there’s something for everyone in the group to enjoy, from the heartwarming charm of the romance to the intellectual intrigue of solving a classic “Who-dun-it?”

Described as “Knives Out gets a holiday rom-com twist,” The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year is a locked-door, enemies-to-lovers, Christmas mystery for the ages. The holiday setting amplifies the charm, with snowy, secluded surroundings adding to the stakes and romance of the unfolding drama. Maggie Chase, a prolific cozy mystery writer fresh off her recent divorce, accepts a cryptic invite from her biggest fan to attend Christmas at their English estate. Her enthusiasm quickly wanes when she discovers that fellow Killhaven author—and her professional rival—Mr. Leather Jacket guy himself, Ethan Wyatt, has also been invited. Their rivalry, built on years of competing for bestseller spots and public praise, fuels sharp-witted banter from the moment they meet.

However, things take a dramatic turn when their host, the most powerful mystery writer, Eleanor Ashley, goes missing from a locked room to which only she holds the key. Forced to put their grievances aside, Maggie and Ethan team up to uncover the truth. As they navigate their differences, their teamwork evolves from reluctant cooperation to a dynamic partnership, with each using their unique skills to piece together the clues.

Where The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year shines is in Carter’s ability to seamlessly blend mystery and romance. Early on, it becomes clear that Ethan harbors no real ill-will toward Maggie, aside from playfully calling her “Marcie.” Maggie, on the other hand, appears to loathe Ethan. The short time frame—a mere three days—might make such a shift in their dynamic feel unrealistic in another setting. However, Carter cleverly uses their shared admiration for Eleanor Ashley’s novels to establish common ground and build trust. Through the mystery and their forced proximity, their relationship begins to flourish naturally, adding depth and believability to their growing connection.

Another standout feature of the novel is Carter’s use of flashbacks and excerpts from the official police investigation to enhance the storytelling experience. This non-linear structure provides background and resolution precisely when it’s most pertinent, creating an experience akin to unwrapping a carefully layered present. The gradual reveal of key information keeps the mystery engaging, allowing the puzzle pieces to fall into place at just the right moments. Additionally, this structure maintains the cozy tone of the novel by reassuring readers early on that Maggie’s fate is secure, heightening the enjoyment of the journey without the worry of impending tragedy.

In The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year, Ally Carter delivers a delightful mix of intrigue, humor, and heartwarming moments, making it an ideal pick for a book club with diverse tastes. It’s a festive, engaging read that showcases the power of combining genres to create a story that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

Short Review (AKA TLDR)

Ally Carter’s The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year blends mystery, romance, and holiday charm into an engaging story perfect for diverse readers. Cozy mystery writer Maggie Chase, fresh from a divorce, attends Christmas at a fan’s estate, only to find her rival Ethan Wyatt among the guests. Their sharp-witted rivalry fades when the host, mystery writer Eleanor Ashley, vanishes from a locked room. Forced to collaborate, Maggie and Ethan investigate the disappearance while navigating their strained relationship.

The novel excels in blending genres, with Maggie and Ethan’s evolving dynamic feeling authentic despite the brief timeline. Their shared admiration for Eleanor’s work builds trust, while flashbacks and police reports add suspense. These elements create a cozy yet layered mystery that keeps readers engaged.

With its humor, romance, and intrigue, The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year is a festive, entertaining read. It’s ideal for book clubs or anyone seeking a cozy winter story that balances charm and clever storytelling.
