The Review

I’ve always had a personal grudge against Lansing, MI, and the surrounding area, even before my days as a Wolverine. So, when I stumbled upon a novel set in the Lansing Area featuring a serial killer, it instantly piqued my interest because, let’s face it, Lansing isn’t exactly known for good news. :p

The novel, “My Murder,” feels like a mashup of “West World,” “Gone Girl,” and “Ready Player One.” It’s a riveting and unconventional murder mystery that transports readers to a futuristic world teeming with clones, serial killers, and buried secrets. The heart of the story revolves around Louise, a mother of an adorable toddler who becomes the fifth victim of a local serial killer. She’s brought back to life through a government project, and as she attempts to re-adapt to her old life, she discovers that her death holds more secrets than she ever imagined.

What truly sets this novel apart is its sheer originality. The idea of cloning murder victims and their quest for truth is a captivating and thought-provoking concept. It breathes new life into the murder mystery genre, and the dystopian backdrop adds depth to the narrative.

The characters in the book, especially Louise, are impeccably developed and relatable. Her journey of self-discovery and the intricate dynamics of motherhood are depicted with profound authenticity. The sharp and darkly humorous dialogues among the clone victims add an intriguing layer to the story.

I must mention the audiobook narration by Rebecca Lowman, which I absolutely adored. Clocking in at 6 hours, even at 1.25x speed, it was the perfect companion for a couple of 16-mile long run.

In conclusion, “My Murder” is a truly distinctive and inventive fusion of science fiction and mystery thriller. While it may initially appear bewildering, the novel’s ingenious concept, well-crafted characters, and unexpected twists make it an enthralling read. If you’re a fan of speculative fiction with a penchant for surprises, this book is an absolute must-read. Katie Williams has delivered a thought-provoking and entertaining tale that will keep you guessing until the very end.
