The Review

The “Is it really reading if it’s an audiobook?” debate pales in comparison to Megan Goldin’s Rachel Krall series. Following the incredibly produced audiobook of “The Night Swim,” I eagerly embarked on the auditory journey of “Dark Corners.” It did NOT disappoint. While I wholeheartedly recommend this novel, it’s disheartening that it wasn’t nominated for the Goodreads Choice Award’s Best Mystery & Thriller, like its predecessor.

In “Dark Corners,” set some time after the events of “The Night Swim,” Rachel Krall is summoned to Daytona Beach by the FBI to interview soon-to-be-released convict Thomas Bailey. Media influencer Maddison Logan has disappeared after visiting Bailey in prison, and the FBI suspects his involvement. When Rachel faces a dead end with Bailey and is cut off by the FBI, she takes the investigation into her own hands, heading to BuzzCon in hopes that one of Maddison’s influencer friends might hold the key to her mysterious disappearance.

Goldin expertly weaves a complex plot with multiple perspectives, including podcast transcripts, creating an immersive experience. Unlike “The Night Swim,” where hints were delivered through letters from Hannah, this time, we gain a second POV from a rideshare driver. Despite some readers lamenting the absence of letters, Mcmillian Audio’s production team ensures that the audiobook remains as captivating as the first.

Rachel Krall emerges as a fearless investigator, and her interactions with Special Agent Joe Martinez introduce an intriguing romantic subplot. However, the intricate plot and multifaceted storytelling remain the true stars, providing a thrilling experience for listeners. Goldin’s ability to blend suspense with contemporary themes, such as influencer culture, adds depth to the narrative.

In conclusion, “Dark Corners” stands as a testament to Goldin’s storytelling prowess, delivering a gripping narrative with well-developed characters and a compelling exploration of the dangers lurking in the digital realm. Whether in print or through the audiobook, the novel captivates, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Rachel Krall series.

Short Review (AKA TLDR)

“Dark Corners” by Megan Goldin is a gripping psychological thriller in the Rachel Krall series. When media influencer Maddison Logan goes missing after visiting a soon-to-be-released convict, Rachel Krall takes on the investigation. The audiobook, skillfully produced by Mcmillian Audio, maintains the series’ excellence, offering a complex plot with multiple perspectives. Rachel’s fearless pursuit and interactions with Special Agent Joe Martinez add depth to the narrative. While the novel wasn’t nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award, it proves Goldin’s storytelling prowess, blending suspense with contemporary themes like influencer culture.
