Thank you to AJ Banner, Lake Union Publishing, and NetGalley for providing me with an electrical Review Copy of In Another Light by AJ Banner, set to publish October 5th, 2021. All opinions mentioned in this review are my own.
The Review
Phoebe Glassman, a university trained Sculptor turned Mortician, begins the novel on the third anniversary of the tragic day she lost both her husband and her daughter just attempting to make it through the day. That is, until her doppelgänger is transferred to Fair Winds Funeral Home from an apparent overdose – with a photo of Phoebe in her wallet and a tattoo that matches her late husbands old phone screensaver. While Phoebe follows a trail of breadcrumbs, we the reader are also left wondering, “are we being gaslighted?” or is Phoebe an unreliable narrator.
In Another Light is the third novel I have read by A.J. Banner, and I must say it is the best one yet. I posted the review for After Nightfall yesterday; as I realized it was never posted before my mental health hiatus, and re-reading what I wrote regarding After Nightfall makes me appreciate A.J. Banner’s fifth novel so much more. She has really gone into herself as an author and I am surprised some of the larger publishing houses haven’t tried to snatch her up from Lake Union Publishing yet!
What I love most about A.J. Banner’s writing is, as soon as you think you know how the plot is headed: it takes you in a whole other direction. For example, with In Another Light, the novel was beginning to head a little too close to the plot line of Double Jeopardy starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones. In this instance, our protagonist was not indicted for the death of their husband; but her husband did seem to have another life (or another light 😛 ), with a women that looked almost exactly like her. Things only get closer to Double Jeopardy when Phoebe discovers a young girl who looks very similar, and around the same age, as her own daughter. It looked like it was going to continue down that path, so when the next big twist hit, I could NOT put my kindle down.
